Eye on the Ball
Losing their vision never stopped a group of blind boys from setting their sights on becoming professional football players.
Led by their impassioned coach Sunny Shalesh, the amateur team, deemed underdogs, surprised everyone by clinching the gold medal at the 2015 ASEAN Para Games.
For the boys, playing football is their shot at a better life. It is an opportunity for them to achieve financial independence to elevate themselves and their families from their current circumstances. But playing the high contact sport poses a real risk of physical injuries. They will also soon lose their training pitch as it makes way for new developments, and their job offer from the Malaysian Sports Council to become full-time athletes hangs in balance.
But for now, the boys have a mammoth task ahead of them - they need to defend their title at the upcoming 2017 Kuala Lumpur ASEAN Para Games. They also need to improve their rankings at the 2017 Asian Blind Football Championship in order to qualify for the World Blind Football Championship.
Will the home ground advantage be on the Malaysian boys’ side? Will they see their dreams of playing against the world’s best teams in the international arena come true? And can they turn their lives around to give them a chance at a future?
